Bureau Mandate
“In Umbra, Pro Luce“
Mission Statement
The Bureau is dedicated to the cataloging of cryptozoological, mythological, and paranormal entities. While we treat our archives with scientific rigor, please remember: The monsters aren’t real, but the woods are.
We encourage the study of folklore and the enjoyment of the great outdoors. We strictly prohibit the harassment of locals and wildlife under the guise of “monster hunting.” Respect nature. Respect private property. Leave no trace.
Quartermaster’s Note
The Bureau may earn a commission from links on this and other pages. All equipment listed is intended for lawful camping, hiking, and survival preparation. Responsible handling of tools is the sole responsibility of the Agent.
Historical Abstract: The Founding (1666)
The Bureau was officially chartered on September 6, 1666, by King Charles II, immediately following the catastrophe known publicly as the “Great Fire of London.”
While history books attribute the blaze to a baker’s oven in Pudding Lane, Bureau archives confirm the fire was a desperate “Scorched Earth” tactical response to a Level-5 Breach: the hatching of a [REDACTED] beneath the city streets. The fire was necessary. The beast was contained.
Realizing that humanity was surrounded by threats it could not understand, the Crown established the Office of Unnatural Defense. Over the centuries, as empires rose and fell, the Office evolved. We expanded to the Americas in 1790, went underground during the Cold War, and digitized in the 21st Century.
Today, we operate simply as The Bureau. We watch the dark so you can live in the light.
